Brief presentation of the institution

The University of Antwerp is the 3rd largest university in Flanders, counting about 20000 students, and divided in 9 faculties. Plasma activities are concentrated in the Faculty of Science. The research includes both theoretical and experimental work on a variety of plasmas and plasma-surface interactions (including DBDs, gliding arcs, plasma jets, ccRFs, ICPs, magnetron discharges, etc.).

The next ISPC conference, edition 2015, will be hosted by the University of Antwerp.

Main Plasma with liquids related topics

- Atomic scale processes of reactive species interacting with water. This research is carried out in the context of plasma medicine in general, and plasma oncology more specifically. So far, the research concentrated on atomic scale simulations of the fundamental interactions between plasma species and biomolecules in a water solvent, as well as at the gas phase / water interphase.

- Current development of a plasma jet for plasma medicine applications, to be used for treatment of cancer cells.

Main Plasma with liquids related research techniques and equipment

- Simulations: classical molecular dynamics, density-functional tight binding, quantum mechanics / molecular mechanics (QMMM) and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations

- Experimental: plasma jet for treatment of cancer cells; characterization of the cell viability and proliferation, as well as proteomic characterization, will be carried out in collaboration with a group from the Biomedical Department of the University of Antwerp.
