Brief presentation of the institution

The Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Tissue Engineering Group (BBT) of the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, of the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC gathers scientists with different backgrounds such as physicists, material science engineers, chemists, and biologists, all of them with broad experience in the biomaterials field. The Research Group has been involved in research and training since 1984 and has developed several projects with private and public funding. During the last 5 years, it has focused its activities in the design, development, functionalization and characterization of new biomaterials, with special attention to bone regeneration applications.

It is important to also highlight the high number of international collaborations of our research group, which include European, Korean, American, Israeli, Turkish, Japanese and South-American Universities, Research Groups and Companies.

The scientific achievements of the research team during the last 5 years include a Spin-Off company, different European Patents licensed to companies, a PCT and a Spanish Patent, 10 PhD Thesis, and more than 100 papers in high-impact ISI-indexed journals, as well as several contributions to International Conferences in the area of the biomaterials, materials science, chemistry, biology, plasma, dentistry, orthopedics and pharmacology.

In the field of plasma with liquids, we are particularly interested in plasma therapies. We intend to investigate the fundamentals involved in the lethal effects of cold plasmas on bone cancer cells, especially when mediated by liquids.
