Brief presentation of the institution

Interdepartmental research and development laboratory «Electron-beam and plasma processes and nano -scale technologies» of the National metallurgical academy of Ukraine (NMetAU) is a reputable institution in Ukraine, specializing in physical – and chemical methods of treatment and study. It consists of three departments with 9 employees, including academic, research, technical and administrative staff. The laboratory fulfills bilateral and multilateral research and development projects, the employees are participants of several national and international conferences, meetings, commercial offers, presentations for large audience as well as scientific lections for public.

Main Plasma with liquids related topics

  • elementary physical and chemical processes initiated by non-equilibrium plasma of various electrical discharges in liquids and solutions;
  • structure changes and phase transformations in a surface layer at the electrolyte –plasma treatment (EPT);
  • development of technologies on the EPT base for cleaning, corrosion protection and polishing of various parts;
  • development of equipment for electrolyte –plasma treatment and modification;
  • computer simulations of processes of plasma discharges in liquids on the base of wavelet transformations and fractal theory;
  • development of recommendations for application of research results in industry and education process;
  • development of high voltage impulse generators for EPT and sources of constant current;
  • micro-arc oxidizing techniques and equipment.

High voltage sources for generation of electrical discharges in liquids
- constant high voltage source (0-5 kV, 1 A, 5 kW);
- соnstant high voltage source (0-10 kV, 0.5 A, 5 kW);
- high frequency high voltage source (50-1300 V, 0.2-7.5 A, 6 kW);
- impulse high voltage source (amplitude of voltage impulse UA=0-40 kV, pulse duration ti = 5 ms; frequency of sequence f=50-200 Hz)

Plasma reactors for generation of electrical discharges in liquids
- installation for study of physical – and chemical processes in plasma-in–liquid on the base of thermostat;
- installation and equipment for micro-arc oxidation;
- installation for jet electrolyte-plasma treatment of material surface;
- vacuum installation with volume 0.5 m3 with sources of voltage for investigation of plasma–in liquids in vacuum.

Plasma diagnostics
- optical measurements of high-voltage and current with delivering to an oscillograph;
- photo camera records of plasma channels and bubble formation;
- device for probe measurements of plasma parameters;
- device for photoelectric diagnostics of plasma.

Material analysis of treated surfaces
- contactless interference 3-D profilometer “Micron alpha”;
- friction machine “Micron tribo”;
- metallographic microscope MIM-8 for image analyzing;
- equipment for natural testing for corrosion resistance;
- thickness measuring МТ-41-NC.
