Brief presentation of the institution

The Institute has been founded in 1956. It was destined to conduct fundamental research in the area of principles of operation, design, construction and developemnt of machinery for energy conversion in flows. Presently, the investigations are being carried out in the following fields: fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics and heat transfer, plasma physics, laser technique, machine mechanics, tribology and diagnostics of power sector machinery.

Apart from the fundamental research, the Institute offers its services in the area of practical engineering applications such as: turbines, pumps and hydrokinetic couplings, ventillators, marine propellers, solar collectors; their design, calculation and technical expertise; development of unique equipment and apparatus.

Main Plasma with liquids related topics

- Elementary chemical and physical phenomena induced by non-equilibrium plasma of electrical discharges in liquid (mainly water) and in gas-liquid environments (discharge plasma diagnostics, analyses of chemical products of plasma in liquid and gaseous phase, aqueous-phase chemistry of electrical discharge plasma in water and in gas-liquid environments, interactions of plasma with the condensed liquid and at gas/liquid interfaces)

- Development of high voltage discharge (pulsed and DC) generators of various design and electrode geometry producing plasma directly in the liquid, in the gas phase in contact with the liquid or in both phases simultaneously

- Chemical and biological effects of electrical discharge plasma in water and gas/liquid environments and their potential environmental, biological, chemical applications (decomposition of organic and pharmaceutical pollutants in water, inactivation of microorganisms in water, nanoparticles synthesis, etc.)

- Applications of non-thermal plasma in gases and water for environment protection (e.g. de-NOx, de-VOC, hydrogen production from hydrocarbons, biofuels and biomass, combating oil slics on the sea)

Lab-scale pulse power generators for generation of electrical discharges in liquid:

- monopolar pulse  (~µs) HV generator with spark gap switch (60 kV, 0.2 J/pulse)

Physical diagnostics of discharge plasma:

- flow structures diagnostics using 3D Particle Image Velocimetry
- emission and LIF spectroscopy

Instrumentation for chemical analysis in liquid and gaseous mixtures:

- HPLC-MS/MS
- GC-FID,TCD, MS
- FTIR and UV spectrophotometers
- TOC analyzer
- nanoparticles analyzer

Various discharge reactors for generation of plasma in liquid and in gas/liquid environments:

- pulsed discharge point-point/point-plane electrode system in water,
- pulsed discharge wire-water surface system in gas

- microwave discharge at atmospehric pressure in gas-aerosol system
